Proof of PPI to HMRC

Has anyone else been asked for proof of the PPI payment by HMRC? I sent off for my Husband's rebate, 3 days later the government gateway said they'd sent a response. I did mine and had the same, then a letter asking for proof of my PPI, I couldn't find the letter and waiting for Lloyds to resend, they gave me the figures over the phone and this is what I used for the R40.
My Husband's government gateway account now says he's owed £278, so I'm a bit peeved that I've done the legwork and if Lloyds don't send me the letter I can't get a refund. But I'm also worrying that I may have made a mistake with tax credits when I got the PPI as i didn't twig I needed to declare the interest hence the proof request??
Anyone else had this?
And will my Husband be sent a cheque or do I/he need to claim through the gateway?

Bit of a confusing post.
Which part of HMRC has asked for the evidence?
He doesn't need to claim the refund online if he doesn't want to. HMRC will send him a cheque in 6 weeks or so if he doesn't bother. But won't banking a cheque be more work than claiming it online?
Don't think you are meant it pick and choose which bits of HMRC you declare taxable income to. Although I think tax credits might have a £300 threshold for interest?

I didn't want to risk them sending a cheque as well as online, - can you tell I'm not au fait with tax rebates?

Although I think tax credits might have a £300 threshold for interest - I know, I really didn't realise this at the time, we also had quite a serious car accident at the time of the payout and had other matters on our mind at the time
