Advice for Milan/Coronavirus please

Hi
I was wondering if I could get any advice/suggestions please.
I have previously booked to go to Milan with some friends for beginning of April. Hotel is fully refundable until a day or two before travel.
Flights are booked on my visa debit card (as I don't have a credit card).
Should the situation in Milan continue as it is, I'm not sure I'd want us to got Milan and would rather do something else.
The hotels are refundable close to the date so shouldn't be an issue getting that back and rebooking. However. would the flights money be lost (unless Ryanair cancel flights, which at the moment seems unlikely). If there anything else I can do to cover myself financially?
Thanks in advance

How do insurance companies define "elderly" or "underlying health conditions".
  • Hi no I am not but reports are already saying Milan is a bit of a ghost city so could improve by April or could get worse. Not sure it will be much fun going there with half of things shut, football games cancelled etc so in that situation would choose to go somewhere else.

I don't see why that is relevant. The FCO havent advised against travel to Milan as far as I know, the OP wont get a penny back on insurance as it stands.

In any case it was just a general point. The hysteria whipped up by social media and the media about all this is ridiculous. Just as likely to cross the road and get knocked over in Milan than contract this and die, is the OP going to remove all risk from his life, he maybe shoudn't leave the house just to be on the safe side.

Then again he could fall down the stairs, so maybe stay on one level.

Living in Italy, though further south, the thing is that the main fatalities have been in very elderly people, with existing health conditions.
I have contacts in the Veneto area, who are hoping that in 2/3 weeks the situation will get much better. At the moment Milan is not a quarantine area so lower risk.
If I see any more risks then I will update.

The young and fit should consider this: what if you bring back coronavirus and infect an elderly relative, or a friend undergoing chemotherapy? You won't die, but the elderly and immune suppressed most likely will.

    Hi,

I also agree that this is a consideration, though others above seem not to think this is a problem and the whole situation is overblown...

Back to your question, at this time, unless the FCO issue advise not to travel or RyanAir cancel the flight, then if you decide not to travel then unfortunately you stand to lose your money on the flights.   I can't think of anything you can do or add to financially increase protection at this time.   This is likely to come down to personal choice on travelling, or not.
