Tili app (owned by Spark Energy)

I recently rented a place via a lettings/estate agent in Newcastle who used the 'Tili' app which ostensibly is for managing your utiltiies / council tax. I thought this was a bit odd at the time, it didn't seem to offer any particular use. It offered to search for utilties for me (I declined).
A couple of weeks later I get an email saying I've been switched to Spark Energy (recently went into administration) - neither me nor the landlord had requested this.
A little research shows Tili is owned by Spark Energy and seems to serve the function of generating new unwitting customers for them whether they want it or not.
Has anyone had similar experiences?

    (my highlighting above)

    Welcome to MSE.
Spark Energy went into administration way back in November 2018. We are now in 2020.

Spark Energy are now owned by Ovo Energy Ltd

If you are referring to asktili.com, then that is a website owned by Ovo Group Limited

Erroneous transfers are not uncommon. If you feel you have been the victim of an erroneous transfer, then you should complain. I suggest you complain to your previous/desired supplier , but you can compalin to either supplier.
If agreed, then you should be returned to your previous supplier as though the erroneous transfer never had never occurred.
    More info here:
     https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/energy/energy-supply/problems-with-your-energy-supply/youve-been-switched-to-a-new-energy-supplier-without-your-agreement/

Though I'm not sure of your chances of success if the erroneous transfer occurred 16 months ago; chances are whatever tariff you were on back then has since expired, and you would now be on that supplier's expensive stardard variable tariff.

(Also ignore any reference to automatic compensation referred to in the above article; that only came into effect back in May 2019)
