Letting agency can't tell me meter number - stuck on expensive tariff

I moved into a rented flat about a month ago. I still don't know which is my gas meter so can't take a reading or change tariffs/suppliers.
The letting agency didn't know which gas meter was the one for the flat when I moved in. They claim not be able to find out from the supplier for privacy reasons. I called the supplier myself - they set up an appointment to show me my meter then didn't turn up for it. All the while I'm on the most expensive tariff and unable to change because I can't take a reading.
Would it be reasonable for me to ask the agency to contribute to my gas bill at this point? the fact that they didn't get the gas meter number from the previous tenant or the landlord is costing me money. Is there anything else I can do?

If you mean you can access the gas meters but aren't sure which is yours - can't you figure that out by turning appliances on/off and seeing which meter starts and stops? In any event, have you tried contacting a potential new supplier? They're often helpful at sorting out this sort of thing (after all, they want your business).

Could you not look at your latest bill and identify which of the meters have that reading on it?Gather ye rosebuds while ye may3

I agree with jimbog- just checked and the bills from my current supplier list the meter number of both electricity and gas meters. I'm sure my last suppliers did too. I've seen meter numbers on a family members bill (who is with another supplier). Who is the supplier?

Forget about most expensive tariff, if you don't have meter readings on check-in you can be charged for energy you didn't even use, since you have no proof how much you have used since moving in. Next time demand meter details and readings prior to moving in. This will also protect you from pending bills from old tenants.
Just start the switch with your preferred supplier. When asked for meter reading say you don't know which is your meter. They will sort it out. They always send someone around to check the readings regardless.

I show my tenants the meters take a reading including picture, add it to the inventory then sign and date it with the tenant present, there can be no arguments this way.
All bills show meter numbers so it should not be hard to identify and no compensation is due for being on a more expensive tariff, you used the energy you pay for it.When using the housing forum please use the sticky threads for valuable information.0
