DWP telephone Compliance Interview

Options
Hello, this is my first post so hope I am in the right place.
Please could anyone give some advice on why my son might have received a telephone compliance interview.
My son is 26 he suffers terribly with depression, anxiety and self harming, he lived at home but desperately wanted to become independent and felt by moving into his own place this would help him mentally.
June 2018 my son purchased a property, he had saved all his life but the majority of the money came from close family members.
By march 2019 his mental health took a turn for the worse to the point of his speech slurring and him beginning to stutter, he was struggling at university and locked himself away in his room.
I contacted MIND he was diagnosed as having a nervous breakdown put on medication by his GP and receiving council ling for months.
He managed to  finish his degree with the help of his tutors and home tutoring in September last year, then signed on Universal Credit around October time.
His mental health improved but it was obvious he had moved out to soon and this had tipped him over the edge, so by Nov 19 he put the house on the market and was planning to move back in with me, which I was relieved about.
An offer was accepted on the property 4 weeks ago so DS mentioned this to his work coach (his savings would soon be over 16,000 and he would not be entitled to UC) and she said not to close his claim until the house was sold and the money was in his bank.
Then last week my son received message through his UC account asking him for a telephone interview....but he has done nothing wrong surely.
He was not claiming benefits when he bought the house and was honest telling them when he received an offer as he was moving back in with me.
This has just knocked him right back, he has become paranoid that he will go to prison, he is not eating sleeping and googling everything, which hasn't helped as these interviews are sometimes related to fraud.
The interview is not for 2 more weeks and I am frantic with worry for him.
Any help would be appreciated Thankyou

It doesn't mean he has done anything wrong. It is a fact gathering exercise to check whether his benefits have been correct. My advice is to gather evidence that when he claimed UC he was living in the house he owned - this means it is disregarding. If he was claiming UC and not living in the house for a temporary absence to stay with you i think hat is also OK. Once the house was put on the market even if he was not living there it can be disregarded for six months (or longer) if Decision Maker thinks it reasonable to do so.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
  • Hi thankyou calcotti this makes me feel a little better as there were quite a few nights he couldn't bare to stay there alone and maybe someone has said he was living back with me. He would sometimes turn up at my house 3am in the morning and not leave till 11 or 12 pm at night. Job centre were aware of his mental health problems as he had to have an assessment. I even had one of his neighbors phone me early one morning because he was walking around his garden with no top or shoes on......thanks for your reply, I am so worried about him.
