Nuisance neighbour deliberate intermittent banging on our walls in the night

Hi,
We have nuisance neighbours who bang on our walls very loudly in the middle of the night to wake us up, normally between 1am and 4:30am. This is carried out in an intermittent fashion, sometimes just one bang and sometimes three times which is why we know as we can hear the last one or two of them and then it stops. This has been going on for years and the council (their landlord) has tried to record the noise before but had informed them they were going to record, so naturally for that period it stopped. We've followed all the things that we were supposed to, a number of years worth of logging on their forms but were told that we are not believed and that the council does not have a duty of care towards my family, only their tenants. I've tried my local MP and explained in detail he said he would try but he was unable to do anything as the council will not be supportive of us. This is just one aspect of many used by our neighbours personal anti social campaign. This is causing ongoing health issues for my family and I was hoping for any advice on impact sound recording equipment that can be left running during the night, with most devices the banging stops (which I know is the intention) before the recording gets started or it only records for a short period of time.

I wish I could turn them off, if only it was allowed. Not even sure I'm in the correct category I cant find one for annoying neighbours.0

Just record with your phone over say a week......Then present the Council with the evidence.
Alternative.....Knock on door....Punch in face....Drinking Rum before 10am makes you
A PIRATE
Not an Alcoholic...!1 -
You say the council don’t have a duty of care towards you and wont support you but the councils housing department and the councils environmental heath are entirely separate. Try contacting environmental heath.Does the neighbour do this because he believes you are being noisy? Its not unknown for neighbours to hear noises that aren't there. To be used as evidence council provided equipment is calibrated and in a locked box. The recordings are time and date stamped.Try and find a digital recorder with extended recording time, using mono will help. A separate microphone might also help.2
