Recently bought a citreon c1. 2006 model. We only had it a month and engine management light came on, so took it to my mechanic, he reset it for me and said the cause was build up in the catalytic converter and all I need to do is drive the car harder to clear it. The "Italian tune up" isn't about accelerating harder. It's about running the engine at higher revs for longer. It can help to clean soot and muck out of the engine, and it can help to heat up the exhaust to burn off muck collected in the catalyst. But it needs a reasonably long run, not just thrashing the engine while driving to the supermarket and back.
But it won't work miracles.

If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
