E energy supply to Scottish Power

Options
Hello,
I recently moved into a new property and the energy and gas is supplied by E with a pre-paid meter. I would like to pay by Direct Debit but E does not offer that service.
Therefore I decided to switch to Scottish Power, now they said Gas can go trough fine but the electric meter cannot. This is because on the national industry data grid the MTC number is shown as 835 and needs to be changed to 801, and can only be changed by my current supplier E. I called E and they said it is not in their power to change it, then I called Scottish Power and explained but they said E should be able to change that number. I am very confused, anyone else been in this situation? I just want to pay by Direct Debit.

  • Have you informed Scottish Power that you currently have a pre-paid meter?

The MTC number dictates the tariff that your property is billed on.
    • 835 MTC indicates your meter is pre-payment
    • 801 MTC indicates your meter is standard-credit
If E are unable to change you from pre-payment to credit then you need to inform Scottish Power that your meter is pre-payment and then ask if you can have this changed to credit once you switch to them.

I would advise to ask Scottish Power this before you complete the switch to them to make sure they can do this for you.
  • Thank you so much for your reply.
I have told Scottish Power that E is not able to change the MTC number and Scottish Power said that they cannot do anything until this number is changed.. and that E should do it.

The MTC relates to the type of meter you have.
If, as you say, you have a prepayment meter, then 835 is correct hence why it cannot be changed.

What you need to do is apply to Scottish Power (if that is your supplier of choice) onto a pre-payment tariff. Once that is complete, you can then request the PPM is changed to a credit meter. If and when that occurs, then Scottish Power (as your current supplier at that time) will change the MTC to 801 to reflect a credit meter.
