Why would a quote for a 1.0 be the same as a 2.0 ?

I changed from a 1.4 small saloon to a 1.8 bigger vehicle and the premium actually went down slightly and I got a small refund.
  • Thanks for the responses. Think it's probably right that my insurance is settled around that price, I guess it's not that bad for  London. I'm going to bite the bullet and get a small car,  I'll be sorry to see the Passat go, it's been  very reliable but it's not suitable for me now.

I have found that there's a point in life where you are sufficiently old, experienced enough, and with a long enough NCB.  At that point, the insurers don't really care what you drive any more, unless it's something stupidly fast or valuable.
A while back, I sold my Mazda MX-5 and bough a Fiat Panda.  It made no difference to the premiums.  My Freelander 2 is bigger, heavier, and more valuable than the Fiat, but I pay pretty much the same amount to insure both.
This. I went from a 5 year old Citroen c3 (1.3 engine from memory) to a 8 month old Kia Sportage (bigger, heavier, more valuable, 1.7 engine) and it cost less than £20 more per annum to insure with the same company.

The biggest risk insurers face is not the car being written off, but third party damage, particularly to rich people with good lawyers. And the damage you can do in a £500 banger is just the same as you could in a £200K Rolls.
