Lowells again

Hey, here's a good problem to get your teeth into.
I rent a house out and only visit perhaps once every 2 years as tenants move out /in. Earlier this year I visited and found a letter from Lowells saying I owe money, so of course, I emailed them with their own reference number, asking what it was about as I'd never heard of them and was unaware of any debt. They replied refusing to converse with me by email, unless I give them my date of birth, as seems to be the case with many others.
I refuse to give them this and we've had several emails back and forth, me asking what the debt is, and them saying they can't talk to me. Their latest email says that correspondence to the rented address may continue, and I've told them it's pointless as I don't live there and the tenants will throw any away, so either email me the details so I can investigate, or shut up basically.
I'm assuming the debt has been incurred by  a tenant and as Lowells have my name, I assume it must be one of the utilities.
Question is, if they send a court summons to me at the rented property, where I don';t live, will I be in trouble?
Many thanks, Wheelie.

  • I believe that Lowell, if they have any doubts about who you are, then they have a statutory obligation to verify your identity before they start corresponding with you.  It is all about data protection...

And yes, they can, and probably will, send a court claim there, and you won`t know about it until another tenant change, when you find the letters.
If you write to them, ie, send them the "provit letter", in the post, you avoid all this unnecessary email tennis.
Put your current address down in the letter as your correspondence address.
    Job done.
