Playing Blu Ray disc in Windows 10

I had a Windows 7 Sony laptop with integral  blu ray player.  I took advantage of the free update to Windows 10 when  it was released  few  years ago without realising that Win 10 does not include software to allow playing of dvd or blu ray discs.   Is there any free reliable software which will allow me to play Blu-rays. I have tried several on the web but non actually seem to work properly.  Alternatively, if I return to factory settings will the blu ray playing software function again or is it lost forever?  I have copies of all my vital files off the laptop and now only use it as back up and spare capacity for  my daily use Windows10  laptop.. so the backward step to Win7 would not really be a big problem.  What is my best option?

You probably had a cut down version of Cyberlink's PowerDVD on the laptop.

https:// www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html will play them with some fiddling around; http:// forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=176924

Alternatively, you can try; https:// www.leawo.com/blu-ray-player/

What errors are VLC showing???  It should be able to play Blu Rays without any problems?

The other issue may be that the blu-ray disk is so new and the blu-ray player so old that it can't play it.  As encryption and content protection becomes more secure the older drives need updating to be able to talk to it.

This can normally be resolved to an extent by updating the firmware of the Blu-Ray drive.

I can't remember offhand and I'm away from home today so I can't check....I Just gave up and used a standalone dvd player, but realised yesterday that I need to get it working again for an upcoming vacation... I'll check for error messages on my return, thanks.

Possibly yes,  the laptop is around 5 years old. And the blu ray disc is new.

Why would you make such a claim? Especially when it indicates clearly in my post that it will not.
    Again: https:// www.videosolo.com/tutorials/play-blu-ray-with-vlc.html
Though why the OP has chosen to carry on the conversation when they have already been given the answer, is anyone's guess.

The OP (me ) carried on the conversation ( obviously to your annoyance ) because she wanted to thank Jon_01 for his suggestions and explain that she was unable to implement them or quote the error message as she was away from her laptop.  I consider it a pretty basic common courtesy.
I have now solved the problem and extend my thanks to you also "TheRightOne" for your suggestions, unless my carrying on the conversation even further adds to your annoyance once again.

You could have just referred him to post #3. ;)
A summary of perhaps what did work for you could be informative. ;)
