I have just had a guy come around to install a smart meter from eon but he was unable to do so as apparently my meter contained asbestos? Seems unlikely to me as the meter installation sticker is from 1995.
He said he would have to report this to the gas board? What could I expect to happen as a result of this?

More likely ,it's the meter enclosure - if it's old it could possibly be made from asbestos sheets and he wouldn't want to be drilling into the back board to fix the new meter!0

Or could be the backboard. I have seen plenty of those with electric meters mounted on them. Also some early concrete sided gas meter boxes have asbestos doors..No one has ever said anything to me about not touching them though..Solid Asbestos should be OK..Still many old garages have them as roofs and sides0

He said he would have to report this to the gas board? What could I expect to happen as a result of this?Hello JoeFLondon and welcome to the Forums. As Houbara says, meters are usually installed on meter boards and some of these have historically had asbestos in them. Asbestos can also be found in other parts of the meter point. Where it is, our technicians won't be able to continue with a meter exchange.Asbestos can be dangerous when disturbed. For example, if cut, scratched or drilled. Where our technicians find asbestos present, they'll abort the visit and report back to us so a specially trained technician or company can arrange to inspect and assess the suspected area.As we're not licensed to remove or dispose of asbestos, we need to find a safe working method to sort out the difficulty and this can mean using third parties. The relevant Distribution Company is notified.Once we know the results of the site inspection, we'll decide what to do next. It maybe we can change the meter using a third party suitably qualified to deal with asbestos. There's no charge for this.Due to the risks involved, these issues can take time to complete safely both for the customer and technician. Jobs are prioritised where there's an immediate risk to health and safety.Hope this explains JoeFLondon.Malc
