Car decision

  • From the list you have supplied I would go for the VW every time.  Apart from the vastly superior build quality it is a petrol engine and VWs reputation and reliability on their petrol engines is second to none.  I have a 2004 VW Golf R and am currently returning 32mpg overall with an average weekly mileage of 320 miles.  In 16 years, with the exception of tyres, brake pads and discs it has only ever seen the inside of a garage for its routine services.  I reckon the car is costing me around £175 per week all in.

I hope you mean per month?

I saw electric cars have been mentioned already. We have test driven a Hyundai Kona and Kia e niro and the acceleration was amazing. They'll do 280 miles so you may only need to charge 1-2 times a week. Depending on your electric tariff that's about £15 a week on fuel even if the electric costs are fairly high. We have been able to order the Kia through salary sacrifice scheme - do you have access to anything like that? The monthly cost is comparable to what you've been looking at already but includes insurance and maintenance.

Just checked,  0-60 in the Kia is 7.5 seconds.

Pardon my ignorance but I don't recall there being a Golf "R" model in 2004...or are you referring to the R32 or a GTi variant?
