freehold/leasehold

I really hope i can get some help on this issue. I bought my mums house several years back (this was due to family issue), when i bought the house my mum told me it was freehold,  She remembers my dad (who is no longer with us) going to pay for it in the early 80's. when searches were done, it came back as leasehold, after a lot research, i found the lease company,  as some of the neighbours still pay every year, and they said we were not on the list, the solicitor who dealt with freehold ,they are no longer in business, the solicitors who took the paperwork, no longer have the information. so i am now lost and don't know where to turn, so help or advice really needed.
Thanks
