I would say £80 / week after rent, course costs & travel home for the holidays should be a minimum for all cost including bills & food if he’s based outside of London so fun clothes etc as well. This is based on the figures many University’s use for their hardship funds so probably isn’t generous.  Depending on his student loan & rent, this may come from that or part time work as well as help from you.
  • For our son we allowed £250 a month on top of his rent. We worked out the annual cost, deducted his student maintenance loan then divided the balance by 12. It has also meant that he has learnt to budget his maintenance loan as well. Obviously we help if he has additional course costs above the norm.
