Models affected: T470, T470s, T480, T480s, T490 / P43s, T490s, T570 / P51s, T580 / P52s, T590 / P53s, X1 Carbon 2017 / 5th Gen, X1 Carbon 2018 / 6th Gen, X1 Carbon 2019/ 7th Gen, X1 Yoga 2017 / 2nd Gen, X1 Yoga 2018 / 3rd Gen, X1 Yoga 2019/ 4th Gen, X1 Tablet 2018/ 3rd Gen, X280, Yoga 370, X380 Yoga, X390, X390 Yoga, P51, P52, P71, P72
ThinkPad laptops from 2017 to 2019 reportedly contain defective USB-C firmware. Lenovo announced a bug that if not patched, to fix the ensuing aftermath of the bug would be to replace the motherboard. Lenovo apparently is adding more drivers for more laptops, if yours is effected but isn't currently listed.
These are the associated problems:
The fix is to go to the Lenovo support pages, look for the title "Critical Intel Thunderbolt Software and Firmware Updates." and download the appropriate driver.

- HDMI output not available
- System battery not charging with a USB-C power adapter connected to the USB-C port
- Intel Thunderbolt pop-up error message
- Intel Thunderbolt safe mode error message
- BIOS Thunderbolt communication error or hang during POST
The fix is to go to the Lenovo support pages, look for the title "Critical Intel Thunderbolt Software and Firmware Updates." and download the appropriate driver.
