Loud Chimney Breast

Hi, I have an open fire place in full use in my living room, above this is my bedroom which has a vent. Through the winter nights (and especially now with these storms) the chimney is pretty loud and makes certain noises. I know an unvented chimney isn’t good and can cause damp, but if the fireplace is in use surely this will limit the damp? Basically what I am asking is if I blocked up the vent (to prevent noise at night from wind etc) would this be deemed okay?
Thanks in advance

Are the unused pots capped ?This can help to reduce the noise and also stops birds and debris falling down the chimney.Like you, I also have fireplaces that have been bricked up in the bedrooms. None of them have vents (but they are capped). The fireplace in the lounge has a stove fitted, and the chimney has been lined. During the winter months when the stove is in use, the chimney breast is around 25°C in the bedroom above - Helps to heat the room, and keeps any damp at bay.An open fire will certainly put some heat into the chimney breast, and will help to keep any possible damp at bay. If you wanted to block up the vent, I'd suggest removing the grill, insert a plastic bag in the hole. Fill the bag with expanding foam, and once cured, cut back flush with the wall and reattach the grill. Or you could stuff the bag with loft insulation..If, at some stage, you decide ventilation is required, the foam will be much easier to remove due to it being in a bag.Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.1
