child benefit reduction?

Hi,
Is the £50K+ salary where you start to lose some of your child benefit the figure of your total salary before tax, NI is paid, or after. Also, can you take into consideration other aspects of your salary such as pension contributions which would lower your salary paid?
Or is it a simple as, if you earn over £50K you lose some of your child benefit? thanks

I am by no means an expert but I believe (and could be wrong) that pensions are definitely taken off the figure and tax etc is also an allowed deduction.
