Woodworm in kitchen worktop and shelves

  • As you believe you have it in the kitchen and bathroom, it would probably be better if you sought professional help with treating the whole house.

Was there no mention of it in your survey?

Actually, there seems to be another person posting on the forum about the woodworm in their bathroom, not me! :)

No mention in the survey, but it seems to be 1 foot wide shelf in the kitchen (multiple holes, maybe 15) and a bit of the counter (3 holes in the counter, 2 holes close to each other and one some 4 inches away). So overall a fairly small area that's affected. I think FreeBear is probably right and the wood was stored somewhere dodgy and picked up the bugs before it got installed :/
  • @SunnyCat I apologise, I had been flicking through a few of the threads about woodworm.

If you can give your kitchen a good going over with stuff, leave it for a few days, so maybe have your microwave (if you have one) in the lounge and have microwave dinners or chippy night, then vacuum and clean your kitchen before using it again, you should be ok.

Best off treating sooner than later, to avoid the little blighters having a 3 course meal and settling in.

You could always remove and destroy the shelf. Treat the worktop.

It is all too easy to pick them up, whenever I buy anything wood based used, I give it a careful look over.

Alrighty. I don't have a flea spray or anything of the sort, so I made a trip to B&Q today to get all the supplies. Got some Cuprinol woodworm killer, which is to be applied with a brush - I prefer this rather than spray going all over my kitchen. Also picked up poly sheeting, gloves and a dust mask to be on the safe side... might be an overkill but that's ok.

I sanded the counter down just a touch to help with absorption. Planning on brushing the liquid on a few times. Then going to open the window for a bit. Should I then throw all the offending items (brush, container I will pour Cuprinol into, etc) in the bin? I read not to put any of the insecticide in the drain, presumably because it kills everything. Any other advice?
