Insurance definition - trip vs journey

We had booked to go away to Dubai for 4 days (12 Feb - 16 Feb). On 11th our daughter was diagnosed with chicken pox which means she is not allowed to fly (by the airline at least).
For this TRIP we used two fight bookings
Ticket No. 1 - a single ticket from UK- Dubai.
Ticket No. 2 - a multi-city booking whose return leg was Dubai-UK (the outward was UK-Bangkok last October)
Our travel insurance policy defines a trip as being away from the ‘home area’ for a period not exceeding the policy length (45 days) but it says “excluding one-way trips or journeys”. The policy does not include a definition of the word ‘journey’
My interpretation is that we had a trip of 4 days but I am concerned that the outward and return flights may be classed as one-way journeys, invalidating any claims for this health-related cancellation.
Surely, a ‘trip’ is a trip regardless of how o happened to be booking the various elements that make up this 4-day trip.
I don’t know where I stand!
It gets complicated by the face the airlines has allowed us to move the inbound leg (Dubai-UK) to any other date free of charge but if I cancel, I won’t get anything back.

I don’t want to cancel and then find that the travel insurance provider won’t pay out based on the above definition of JOURNEY.

You are over-thinking this. Decide what outcome you want and talk to your insurer as they are the only people who can definitively advise you. Just tell them the situation, don’t bring up “trips” and “journeys”.0
