leak in the house

Hi can anybody shed some light for me?
My water bill arrived and it has doubled. Yorkshire water mentioned that I seemed to have a leak, the engineer have checked it today and advises that it is internal, but it is not any of the usual culprits, Yorkshire water mentioned that they have noticed the water usage has changed from August so the leak must have started there. I have renewed my home insurance in January with another company but not got emergency cover, am I allowed to backdate a claim even if the cover has expired? I was only made aware of this issue in the last 2 weeks.
Any ideas on how to locate a leak?
