    Okay... let me check if I've got this right. There are a couple of question which would be helpful to know the answers to and please correct any errors of fact:

    1. your wife rented house A. 
    2. your wife's friend rented house B from the same letting agency
    3. you wife's friend moved out from house B
    4. your wife preferred house B and so she asked the gentleman in the letting agency office if she could move - did she move her contract, or did she agree to take over her friend's contract? 
    5. this was agreed - but apparently the lady at the letting agency knows nothing about it. 
    6. the lady at the letting agency is telling your wife she is liable for two lots of rent - please clarify if the accusation is something else

    That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.
