Insurance Discrimination - Recently Widowed

Direct Line have more than doubled my insurance renewal because quote 'you are a widow and only have 1 vehicle'. Even though I have home insurance through them, so this is a so called 'discounted price'.
Needless to say that I won't be renewing with them, but other quotes are coming in even higher. I have tried putting in married on searches and the premiums come down, but of course I cannot take a policy with this false information.
Can anyone shed a light on this sharp practice please as obviously this is quite distressing right now?

Insurers base their prices on risks and statistics or maybe there are lots of people claiming in your post code, especially if others are doing the same.

    Nothing personal but business

You don't need to need to keep with the same insurer, just as insurers don't have to keep you by making it financially nonviable for you

I think that needs some context.   If you were on a multi-vehicle policy previously then you would lose your discount if you drop to 1 car.  That is not discrimination.

Maybe married couples are actually safer in the real world E.g. one is tired so the other drives?
its not discrimination if its based on claims experience
the implication is that your higher risk now.

Oddly enough single people are NOT protected under discrimination legislation

    sorry for your loss
