Click clack mushroom waste plug

I have two click clack mushroom waste plugs and neither will now seal when I try to push them down. In the past I'm sure I found a video on t'internet to show how to remove the click clack mechanism and to clean it etc.I can't find it so hope someone can help me. I've managed to remove the assembly from the sink but can't figure out how to remove the actual clicker from it. I've attached three photos that shows the assembly removed. I've tried searching images to see if I can identity the make / brand / model etc but to no avail. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Mine were sticking down so I soaked them in limescale remover overnight which sorted them out - we have hard water though so it may not be your problem.
    Otherwise try wd40

  • I've already tried soaking them in vinegar to remove limescal but they still won't stick down. I suspect someting's broken or misplaced within the clicker so will have to replace it. They're a few quid on Ebay but need to get the old one out to measure it in order to buy the correct replacement.

Mine was a different design to this but on mine the mushroom bit unscrewed from the clacker mechanism.
i can't really see if yours is the same.

Mine unscrews from the unit. Maybe over time yours has seized and a good soak in WD40 will help.

  • I've managed to unscrew the 'mushroom' cap from the remainder of the assembly.
Still can't disconnect the actual click clack clicker piece, the rusty coloured bit at the bottom of this latest photo above. Have bought some WD40 today so will attack the clicker with it tomorrow once it's dried out. Thanks for the suggestions.

Using a few cycles of vinegar, soak, rinse, WD40, soak, rinse, I finally managed to dissemble all the parts. See photo. I managed to re-assemble one at the first attempt but couldn't engage the bit that looks like a sawn-off paper-clip into the V ratchet. I was on the verge of giving up when it finally works so not quite as simple as this Youtube clip would have you believe:
Just search for "Fixing a Pop-Up Push-Button Basin Stopper" as I'm not privileged to post a hyperlink.
I managed to stretch the slip ring and needed to buy a replacement.
One last thing, the complete assembly just sits in the top of the waste pipe and doesn't not screw into place.

I nearly bought a replacement click clack mechanism on EBay but didn't in the end as I could find one that matched the dimensions of mine. I didn't realize they came in so many subtlety different sizes so beware if you're tempted to buy one from your local DIY store.
