Giving wrong meter readings by mistake!

So I have been really daft and managed to give the wrong meter readings for my electricity to my supplier. They obviously did not check my closing meters with my old supplier as they promised me. So it was only today when I pressed the meter too many times that I realised. I know I've been stupid but this is the first time I've ever had to give readings as I had pay as you go and smart meters before.
I have been giving the total read and rate 1 instead of rate 1 and rate 2, effectively paying twice for rate 1!
Do I have a leg to stand on now I have told them I've made a big mistake? This has been going on since May 2018!

At first glance I can't see any reason why you would not be able to get a refund for the over-payments.So does your first bill from your current supplier show the opening readings as the incorrect ones that you provided to them?Do you have a closing bill from your previous supplier that shows the correct readings at that time?0

The opening/closing meter readings are usually provided by you to the supplier and validated by a third company based on your previous usage and other info, so if you've been reading the meter incorrectly all along, there would possibly be nothing flagged up when you changed suppliers.
It's a costly mistake as you've paid for more electricity than you've used, but while its your error, I don't see why you won't get your money back once its sorted. I'd contact your supplier with the correct meter readings, take photos and send them showing each reading too, and request and updated bill. Also arrange for them to come and read the meter so they can check it properly.1
