Eon bill mistake.

Hi everyone.
We moved into our house 2 years ago. The previous tenant had a key meter installed but we contacted Eon and informed them that we were the new tenants and gave them a meter reading and they sent us a new key which we have used ever since.
We have recently had a bill for over £2000 which we couldn't understand as we had no previous bill with this company as our previous house was paid in full with another provider.
It is my understanding that if you dont have any outstanding Bill's you cannot run up any charge for electric if you pay for you electric on a key meter,
You pay as you go.
Eon are now insistent that this bill is our responsibility and it now stands at £5000 with charges.
It doesnt even make sense with the amount as we couldn't use that much in the 2 years we have been feeding the key meter.
Has anyone else had a similar experience with Eon and if so how was it resolved?
Can this bill effect our credit score?
It seems the previous tenant had an outstanding bill but left the property without paying the balance.

Good morning bradliano and welcome to the forum.
This is going to need to be looked at by a Pre-Payment specialist, as the balance will need to be investigated, you can contact us via Live Chat on the website and select Pre-Payment.

They will need to look at if all of the payments have hit the correct account, it may be useful if you have some receipts. If the account has been billed from the accurate meter read that you provided when you moved in and if this is now billed up to an accurate read. We'll check if the prices on the physical meter match those that we're using to bill the account to.

This is just a few things that will be looked in to and they may need you to take some information from the meter as well.

We don't share information with credit reference agency's for customers that have Pre-Payment meters, unless the meters were installed to collect a debt.

I hope this is resolved quickly for you.

Hopefully E.ON will sort you out, but as preparation for your conversations with them I would suggest you find the original meter readings if you can and compare them to your current readings to get a confirmed total for your usage.
You can then compare that usage to the amounts you've been paying to top up the meter and see if that makes sense.
