Vauxhall Astra or a Renault Megane

Hello everyone, Im looking for a bit of advice. My current car has packed up after 12 years of ownership (BMW) and now it is time for me to change. Im looking for car with rear Legroom as I have a 2 year old child so the car seat and legroom is one of my priorities. Im also looking for something with a boot space and again Low road tax and reliability. Currently I have an option of a £3000 budget to splash out and I have 2 cars in view. One is a Vauxhall Astra 12 plate estate with 112000 on the clock - 2 owner car and the other is a Renault Megane 2008 one owner car with 92,000 miles on the clock, both have £20 road tax and insurance groups are under 10.

My questions are:
1-) which of these are more reliable and also what are the things too see in view like the timing belt/chain, dpf, etc. BTW both are diesel.
2-) Is the legroom on the rear end ok for both of these
3-) Is the newer Megane better than the old ones and so is the Astra too.
Thanks in advance. Appreciate your time guys

You're choosing between a 14yo 92k mile car and an 8yo 112k mile car. Number of owners, VED, insurance groups - all irrelevant... Buy on condition, condition, and condition alone.

As far as "is legroom OK"... Have you not looked at them?

I've got a 2011 Megane 3. Rear legroom is atrocious.

Rear legroom on the Megane is knee cap breaking.

Rear legroom on the Astra is a bit better, but both depend how tall the front seat passengers are.

Check service records, cambelt changes etc at those mileages.

Renault are renowned for electrical faults. Too much town driving in these (or not enough long/motorway journeys) is likely to cause DPF issues on both.

For under 3K you can get a Mk2 Skoda Octavia Estate. Great rear legroom, easily fits a large rear facing child seat and huge boot. I believe the 1.9 diesel is well rated for its reliability, but the more efficient 1.6tdi is also available at that price for Full service history examples.
