Was paying 22p per kWh for Robin Hood so used citizen's advice website to find a cheaper one and found Yorkshire energy for 12p per kWh fixed for 12 months

Just did another search and now there is another one which is slightly cheaper but only by £2 each month so won't bother switching again

So do the prices of electric change all the time?

  • The short answer is yes. New tariffs are launched on a nearly daily basis.

New tariffs for both electric and gas come out pretty regularly for most suppliers, yes. There's usually no notice of a change coming (even to the companies own CS) Once a new one comes out the old one is gone (baring exceptional circumstances) for good.

A fixed tariff won't change for the duration of the contract period, variable rates can change, but typically don't change more than a couple of times a year, and usually with at least a month's advance notice.
As well as other companies coming out with new tariffs, your current supplier may release one too and you can often* switch to that as well, which is a lot more straightforward than a full 'switch', you just agree a new price in exchange for pushing the end date back.

*Unfortunately the 'Brand new customers only' nonsense has crept back into the industry since OFGEM relaxed the rules about what tariffs companies can offer

This year prices have come down quite rapidly - just signed up for separate suppliers of gas and leccy.- both p per kwh prices are the cheapest I've had for at least 4 years  :D , since the last time new deals were being offered almost every day!
Looking further back, I've only once been on cheaper tariffs in the last 7 years!

Venomyx - How's your switch to YE going ?   Have they given you a date for the switch, asked for meter readings? Has RH sent you a sorry you are leaving us email ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

All been covered already but yes, OP, gas and electricity charges can change in the blink of an eye; they are like share prices:  Why do you think there are so many comparison sites all vying for your "business"?  Because tariff prices change all the time and energy companies pay these sites for every customer who uses them to switch; this is one of the many reasons this site was set up in the first place.... Of course, the people who really pay are we customers via increased prices, the savvy ones of whom use sites like this and so it rotates.
