R40 form and self-assessment

Hello, I was going to complete the R40 form to claim back tax paid on my PPI, which I received in 2017. At the time I was employed. I am now self-employed. So do I claim via R40 or self-assessment. And if self-assessment then how? Thanks in advance.

Which tax year do you mean? 2016:17 or 2017:18?
And whichever it is did you need to file a Self Assessment return for that year?0 -
It would have been tax year 17/18.. And actually yes I became self-employed that very year thinking about it.

As it was taxable income you presumably included it on your 2017:18 Self Assessment return and would have received any refund or tax reduction then.
Or do you mean you filed a return without this income on it?0 -
i filed it without it. I had become self-employed that summer and didn't even think of it....0

...and have only now found out about being able to claim back the tax....0

You need to Google "overpayment relief".1
