If the applicant doesn't want to give this information they don't have to. If as a result the company doesn't want to employ them they don't have to either!Jsacker said:It's just unclear as to whether it is a GDPR issue or just a personal preference issue. Poster could speak to the ICO about potential GDPR issue and see what they think, if they are hung up on that point.
If for some obscure reason the company only want to offer employment to people who drive a particular make of car, or have solar panels on their roof, or have a well kept front garden that is their privilege too!1

A link to facebook would contain nothing but whatever was publicly made available by the facebook member. That would not breach data protection. How can you protect something that someone has made public online? There is more personal info in the CV or references they ask for.0

I don't do "social" media apart from this site so admit I don't know how *Fakelook works other than that it has *filters and Ed Balls had stars around his head when he was cavorting with that Italian media-ho in that documentary on BBC 2 the other week. This does not in any way alter my opinion that some prospective (or actual) employer has no right whatsoever to request, let alone demand, access to someone's account. The idea they could try to force someone to open one just to be considered for a job is repugnant.0

So I'm not eloquent like you ? ConceitedKatrinaWaves said:
Maybe you aren't very good at putting your point across eloquently then. You can make comments about the necessity of biologically female/male only spaces (which I absolutely agree with in many cases, and any genuine transgender person would be more than happy with that) without needing to make blanket ignorant and untrue statements such as 'women don't have penises'aife said:@ Brassic & Katrina - I don't want to get into a debate on this but just to clarify ,I made that comment in a discussion about access to safe places , i.e. hostels , refuges , women only wards in mental health units , in response to some irrational comments from TRA zealots. I have nothing against trans people but there are basic protections for vulnerable girls and women that are being abandoned to pacify a vocal minority (and a handful of men with bad motives) , helped by people like you who think you're being 'progressive' but mostly haven't bothered to think through the implications and prefer to take the easy option.
Anyway , as somebody already pointed out , this is an employment sub forum so I'm not going to engage in any more discussion on this subject. Don't bother me with your shallow virtue signalling.
My problem is with the madness that has arisen out of the whole GRA/ Self i.d debacle.
You can't support this if you're in favour of safe spaces , just as you can't reasonably refer to "biologically female/male" and think it's 'ignorant and untrue' to say women don't have penises.
"Any genuine transgender..." - The 'any true scotsman ' argument . Ridiculous.0

Thank you to everybody who posted helpful comments .
To clarify , Lionbridge deals with evaluating online content, that's why I thought there might be legitimate reasons for their question and that my lack of followers on FB might be seen as a negative. I was particularly hoping there might be someone here who had gone through the application process , as this site is where I first heard about Lionbridge etc. .
The concern about comments on Twitter was something of an afterthought , but I think some of the responses here confirm it is a concern.
I am uncomfortable with the way employers increasingly want to access/control people's private lives , and how keen some people are to go along with this , in the guise of being 'liberal'
I am a life long socialist but the kind of intolerant , oppressive group think we seem to be sleepwalking into terrifies me. It appears five people reported my initial post . Pathetic. I disagree with people all the time , so what ? I don't feel the need to report anyone just because they have a different point of view.
I think in a decade's time a lot of people are going to regret facilitating the McCarthyism that's creeping into society0
