A different approach to litter trays

Hi all,
I have six cats who now live indoors with a catio. With a refuse collection every other week. A you can imagine, I've had to be creative about the litter trays. At first, I was using the flush-able substrate recommended on here by many (Oko, World's Best ???? ) but I discovered that putting cat poo in the sewers is not good as toxoplasmosis is getting into wildlife. Think again. Some of the cats seem to prefer to use a flat surface and not dig, so half the trays had puppy pads and for the others I used a lightweight recycled paper based substrate. So far so good, but I was unhappy about the amount of plastic I was getting through with the puppy pads. So I've gritted my teeth and swapped to washable incontinence pads.

To my amazement, I prefer them. They keep stain free with nappisan and dry quickly. They hold more pee than the puppy pads and because they are firmer don't wrinkle up and go out of place when a cat scratches at them. This means I never find a used puppy pad with the back wet as it sits in a puddle of pee. These stay solid and dry.

The difference in the amount of rubbish I produce is very noticeable and the pads are generally nicer to handle than puppy pads.

Food for thought perhaps, for those looking into alternatives.
