Council Tax Premium charges
Hi have a property that has now been empty for 2 years and I have just had a Premium charge added to my councile tax bill of 100% !!!
Is this legal - can I be charged twice the amount ?
Many thanks.

Yes, most councils do this. You have used up all your free/reduced tax.
What does it say re council tax on your council site

They make the rules up.......if you dont want to pay it then either sell or rent it out.0

It is on the market, so hopefully it wont take too long to sell. I was just a bit surprised by the premium.................0

The legal framework to allow it has been in place since 2013.

Pleased to see another council applying pressure on owners of empty houses. To many people have no permanent home.If it's not sold - for 2 years!!!! - there are the obvious at least 3 likely reasons: Might I 'umbly enquire if you have addressed the matter, please?Artful: Selling a property, hopefully this month, just signed final papers with solicitor, empty since last June.Best wishes to all, including those who disagree with me.3

It's entirely legal (S11B of the Local Government Finance Act 1992, in England - Wales and Scotland have similar provisions) but there are ways around the charge in many cases.Tryinghardtosave said:Hi have a property that has now been empty for 2 years and I have just had a Premium charge added to my councile tax bill of 100% !!!

I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
