Who is Responsible for Lost Package?

I sent an item back to a seller but they claim not to have received it and to contact the post office.
I have proof of postage so went to the PO where I posted the item and they said it is nothing to do with them take it up with the seller.
Who is right?

When you send back a return to the seller on ebay you are meant to use a tracked method. Proof of postage is not sufficient.
Did you send back the return off your own back or did you use an ebay label?
Either way the onus is on you as you posted it, my point being that if you had bought tracked you would know either way if its been delivered or where it is.

How long ago?  You can raise it with Royal Mail online but they won't investigate until something like 3 weeks have passed.
I need to think of something new here...

How did you send it back? If it was a standard parcel via RM then there will be a bar code on your receipt showing whether item has been delivered or not.

Also as above, I’m assuming this was a change of mind return as you were paying postage , so if item hasn’t been delivered then seller does not need to refund you, but you can use your POP to claim your loss (up to £20) from RM

If the seller is a business and the OP was exercising their right to cancel their contract the seller needs to refund within 14 days of return or within 14 days of proof being supplied that the goods were sent back, whichever is earliest.

Also worth a note that if the item was SNAD and the seller supplied the label eBay should find in the buyers favour and refund upon receipt of the proof of postage displaying the correct house number and postcode.
