CCJ automated phone call - have I missed something or is it a scam?

This morning, I received on our landline an automated call saying along the lines of: "It has come to HMRC's attention that you have a CCJ.  Press 1 to speak to an advisor".
I hung up but went into panic mode.  There is nothing on either my or my partner's credit records - thanks to the Credit Club for making checking so easy - and I'm not aware of any outstanding debt.
Is this a scam or is a CCJ on its way to us?

  • It's the usual scam that attracts the easily fooled.

    Ignore them.

How on earth would HMRC know that, and why would it be an issue to them anyway ?
Judgments are granted by courts, certainly not HMRC, there is also a long process of letter tennis with court documentation before a CCJ can be granted.
    If in doubt, its a  S C A M !!!

I see what you did there - the relevant paperwork does indeed need to be served to the receiver in the right way.... ;)

Most automated messages asking you to press option 1 are a scam. I would have hung up.

Did you speak prior to hearing the message (for example, saying "hello")? I've found that many of these automated messages are voice activated. If I don't recognise a number I never speak until I hear someone at the other end speak. Often on a scam call the line will simply go dead.
  • Many thanks to everyone who has replied and for their good advice - will try not to panic in future!  Guess this is what the scammers depend on.
