Remember if you change the battery - earth off first then disconnect the live
Live on first then connect the earth
Do it this way and if your spanner touches anything metal on the car you will not burn yourself ( you cannot electricute yourself off a car battery ) but due to the high amps your spanner will get hot quicky.

Thanks for this, appreciate the advice! I’m very happy changing batteries just need to figure out the memory saver tool, don’t want to stuff up the on board computer! looks like I just plug one end in to the OBD socket and the other into a different (my) car cigarette lighter! I’m sure it won’t be that simple though ..Ganga said:Remember if you change the battery - earth off first then disconnect the live

On many cars, the cigarette lighter socket is disconnected when the engine is turned off.Cap2019 said:Thanks for this, appreciate the advice! If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
I’m planning to use my cigarette lighter to power my girlfriends car (enough to maintain the computer)Ectophile said:

Hope you have plenty of fuses then. That fuse is probably 10 or 15amps. Not a lot really. With her battery weak and yours well charged the current could be far greater than the fuse or the wiring will allow.Cap2019 said:

I tested that with 2 small Lipo batteries 1.5A 2S, 8.4v fully charged 7.2v Nominal. One was fully charged
and the other was at 6.8v. Connecting them together gave a brief rush of 87amps. Dropping to
30amps where the discharged pack swelled like a balloon and promptly failed. Negative leads
solder connection failed it the wire fell out.
You need to be careful connecting batteries.

You need to be careful connecting batteries. Thanks for the warning, the memory saving device is something like this .. (take the space out for link)cablematic .com/en/products/obd-power-adapter-cable-to-preserve-the-cars-memory-saver-OB060/?gclid=CjwKCAiAhJTyBRAvEiwAln2qB8Zac4XP_SqqSrfNvrvi8AEG3nL3li7n10ttojSXECMTn1dVwj9q0xoCmNcQAvD_BwEPlugs into the OBD port of the car that you change the battery on and the cigarette lighter of a donor car. Widely used. Is this the connection you are referring to?0 -
Has this unusual feature:Cap2019 said:his12V minister through the OBD port

Also, 1.8m length isn't very much to get between cars.0 -
Just stick a new battery in, not worth the hassle.0

Sorry, didn't realise I was being miserable, I just didn't want you getting stuck. I think one battery is past it, the one that struggled to start a car. You may get a few months out of it if it survives the winter, or it may not start your car tomorrow. You're taking a gamble (and yes, so have I!).

Sorry about my rudeness, I’m really not trying to cheap out on a new battery if that’s what is needed I just want to make sure I’m not replacing it if I don’t need to! I also didn’t realise what a faff it was to change the battery of a modern car with all their computers and such. It won’t be long before we can’t even top up the windscreen wash.almillar said:Sorry, didn't realise I was being miserable, I just didn't want you getting stuck.
