I just received a cheque for £47.46 from EON to 'The Occupier' of my home. It says that it is because they didn't update the prices on my pre-payment meter. We don't have a pre-payment meter and we are no longer supplied by EON (although we were when we moved in to the property in November). Any thoughts on what to do with the cheque? It is not intended for me but I doubt it is intended for the previous tenant either (I will check). If they don't want it then I am tempted to pay it into my account and give to charity. I don't want EON to have the money because they treated us appallingly in our last house (another story - I will never use EON again to supply my energy).

Just send it back - it's not yours
PS You won't be able to pay a cheque payable to "The Occupier" anyway
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill1 -
I don't imagine that a bank is going to let you pay a cheque into your account that doesn't have your name on it anyway...

Theo C Cupier has a terrible credit record, so opening an account in his name might be difficult!!1

Sounds to me like EON could be on a little hunting expedition to find out the current occupier's real name: after all, most people know that you can't deposit a cheque made to "The Occupier" into a named account...0

In that case just send it back "Not known at this address" no need to divulge name.

I've printed off a pile of "No longer at this address" labels for all the previous tenants' bills & bailiff letters!0

It sounds like this customer had the wrong prices set on their meter meaning they overpaid for the energy they had used. This could've happened if they had used the wrong key to top-up or if a product change hadn't been updated on the meter. Where our systems flag up these mismatches we automatically send cheque refunds to put right any overpayments. This can sometimes take quite a time to recognise and sort.As the cheque was made payable to 'the occupier' it sounds like the person using the energy didn't let us know they had taken over responsibility for the property so an account could be set up in their name. If you know who this person is, please ask them to contact us as we owe them money.I'll alert the team looking after these refunds as clearly we shouldn't be sending out cheques like this. As I say, they're sent automatically and so we need to build something into our systems to stop this from happening.Sorry again to bother you with this and thank you for bringing it to our attention.Malc“Official Company Representative
