We had our gas and electricity supplied by EON since feb 2019, unknown to us in Sept 2019 someone on our street mistakenly gave a the supplier 'bulb' our meter serial number to open their own account.
 In a nutshell we then supposedly  'left' EON.
Upon looking to switch suppliers in January we realised we had no gas supply with EON and investigated to find out the above info.
After lots of communication between us, eon and bulb, our gas meter  was finally sent back to EON this week. We are now wanting to switch to a totally new supplier but unsure what happens to the money due for gas that we have used but not had a supplier for, we can't  owe EON it as they closed our account, but the other supplier has never opened an account in our name and address just used our meter details for someone else's account, does anyone know what happens in this situation??

    Hello busterkeye and this sounds like what's known as an Erroneous Transfer (ET).
    This is when a supply is mistakenly transferred to or from a company without the customer's knowledge or agreement. It sometimes happens when meter reference numbers and addresses are mixed up on the national databases. These databases hold details of all the electricity and gas meters in the country. All suppliers use them when handling a change of supply and sometimes apply for the wrong account.
    Once an ET has been identified, the supply will be sent back to the losing company as though it had never left. The supply period will be continuous and carry on as if never being away. Customers impacted by an ET should not have to pay the company who took the supply by mistake. The company who wrongly took the supply will cancel any bills and charges.
    As your gas has now returned to us, we'll charge all usage from the point the ET happened up to when you change supplier.
