Broadband at new home

Hi,
I currently live with my parents and have a bought a new house with completion taking place this week. I am confused as to what to do with broadband at the new house. As I live with my parents, I don't have a current broadband provider. Do the seller's cancel the broadband at the property? They are currently with BT/Sky I believe and I would want to sign up to virgin. I won't be moving into the house for a few weeks so can wait for the installation of the virgin broadband after cancellation of the BT/Sky broadband . I have searched on the internet but it is not clear whether the broadband continues when I move into the property...

Would appreciate clarification

The sellers will cancel their broadband contract.

You can then select whichever broadband provider you want.

The current broadband connection will be cancelled by the present owner.  You'll need to set up a new account for the property yourself.  You might be able to get the ball rolling once you've exchanged contracts (at your own risk) but you cannot be connected before completion as the property isn't yours until then.  So it's likely you'll be a while without a connection.

  • Check that Virgin supply the address first and which broadband/fibre speeds to the property are possible.  They don't supply everywhere.

They supply everywhere ADSL is available.

They only supply their fibre to properties in certain areas...

Virgin don't supply our road - fibre or otherwise!

After you’ve exchanged contracts you can phone the provider you want to use and set up an account, giving them the completion date. They’ll arrange to install on/after that date.

If the current owner has fibre and you’re getting Virgin cable then it doesn’t even matter if the seller forgets to cancel their line in time as you won’t be using the phoneline to the property.

Virgin only provide services via their own network now. They sold their ADSL to TalkTalk in 2013. So you'll only get broadband if you are in a Virgin cabled area.
  • Sellers must cancel their contract, and you can talk to Virgin and start yours as soon as you move in.

The sellers should cancel theirs, but they might not do so until after moving out (some people are disorganised with these things) - they may also assume they don’t need to cancel and just let bills turn up for you. So they should cancel and you can switch, and whatever happens you can switch, but don’t assume it’ll be all clean on their side
