Lost bank transfer, is this possible?

I think I might be being led up the garden path, but before I make any accusations what are the chances of the following happen?
Someone has been paying a fixed sum of money into my Barclays account on a monthly basis, until recently.
Three payments have now been missed, and I've been told by this person it's because  his new bank has sent the money to the correct sort code but the wrong account number and that his bank can not trace where it's gone.
This has supposedly happened during the bank switching process (none of their other payments have been effected) and the details they have for me are correct, it's the new bank that has supposedly got it wrong.
How likely this to be true?
Can money just disappear remembering  that this isn't just a case of putting in wrong numbers during an online bank transfer.
Many thanks

Legs and bells come to mind.

And If he has you as a named payee on the new bank account and your details are correct, how does the misdirection keep happening?

The money would have bounced back into the payer's account if the bank doesn't recognise your sort code. This is theoretically possible but it could easily be fixed by the sending bank - they'd just have to update their sort code table.

Which is the sending bank, and which the receiving?

The new bank would know where it's gone, they have the account number. Whether they could get it back is another matter, although if it's their fault they should be reimbursing anyway & worrying about getting it back later.

Or "someone" has stopped paying you & is making excuses, which sounds more likely.

Get them to give you a screen shot of the wrong details. Or a letter from the bank proving the error.
If the error was in the switching process (yea right) just how do accounts details change when they are electronically sent from the old to new bank.
His new bank should be sorting it out. And that would NOT take 3 months.
Sounds to me like they are no longer paying you...
    Life in the slow lane
  • Thanks everyone for the replies, you've pretty much confirmed my own thoughts, have asked to see screenshots of the new bank statements showing the supposed transfers, 2hrs and no response.
  • Are they renting property from you and trying to worm their way out of paying by any chance?
    :o
