Smart Meter I thought it was April 1st
Options
Hi All
I help my dad to make savings online as he not online. Anyway i found a cheaper supplier for his gas and elec. It's with british gas. I set it all up and recieved a email from them for readings, so i sent them off. it was not until today when i was clearing up my e-mails i read all of the e-mail from british gas. It said that he would have to supply readings as the smart meter he has is not compatible with there system, i thougt i was 1st April, anyone else had this problem?

Assuming his smart meter is a SMETS1, then it's almost inevitable that it will become 'dumb' once you switch suppliers. Not really a problem; for my own peace of mind I would read my own meter monthly, whether or not I had a SMETS2 one.

Depending on the manufacturer, they may not be compatible with all other suppliers. This problem will be resolved by late this year when all SMETS 1 become DCC compatible. This means, like SMETS 2 already are, they will be compatible with all suppliers but for the time being it seems that you may have to do it the old fashioned way and supply manual readings.0

Is it April 1st? If the SMETS1 becomes dumb then it needs reading frequently. Therefore its life expectancy is significantly reduced. My gas meter died before Christmas, & a standard card reader meter - "Quantum meter?" was installed. Apparently SMETS 2 are unavailable in Dorset? No sign of the Quantum being updated.0
