Can someone please help me.  i am being given conflicting information.  Am want to redecorate my kitchen and the ceiling has plasterboard, with artex, then painted with gloss, not sure if the artex has Asbestos.  Some plasterer's are telling me they can seal the artex then skim over.  others have told me you should never go down this route as it will be too heavy and the plaster is likely to fall away at some stage.  Can someone advise please as i don't want a bodge job.  I have also read that if would be safe to remove the artex if it was dampened prior to scraping off.  Any help would be appreciated.

What is the age of the house?  Asbestos wasn't used after a certain date.  The only truly safe way is to have a little of the suspect plaster tested.

Dont think anyone can give a 100% correct answer, all plasterers give different answers, also they might want a big job as opposed to a skim.

If the lath and plaster ceiling is in good condition and not sagging anywhere you can scrape the high bits of the artex wearing suitable pp3 mask and wetting down with water, the content of asbestos is low in artex <10%. Also the artex would be sealed with emulsion paint over the years. Then get it skimmed with gypsum plaster . If the ceilings are in bad shape and bits of mould etc then might be best to either take the ceiling down and plasterboard it or plasterboard over the top. Just check the joists are in good shape via the loft if over boarding it.
