AA Car Insurance - Take care if you have over 9 yrs NCD

Buyer beware!! My husband used a price comparison website and chose 20+ years NCD from the dropdown as he has been driving for far longer than 20 years and has never made a claim.

The AA quote looked good so he bought the policy. He provided proof of NCD from his previous Insurance, this states that he has ' 9 or more years' NCD which I believe is now common practice with many insurers. The AA now want another £30.36 because it does not say 20+ years, or he can pay an admin charge of a similar amount to cancel (although cover over has not yet started).

We find this totally unreasonable and have no idea how they expect him to prove a longer period. It seems they are penalising safe drivers and in any case we can't understand why 9 years would not be long enough to prove that anyone is a very safe driver, as it does with most insurers.

He has asked to cancel the policy and we will be contacting the Financial Ombudsman for advice if they do charge the cancellation fee. - keep you posted !

I noticed this to, my latest renewal came through Monday stating 9+ years even though I have a 15 year claim free history and used this with Halifax when I took out the policy. Only proof i have is saved pdfs of previous policy's, but I think this is the max with most now.

On confused.com you can select 20+ but going through took the insurers websites I've noticed they are limited to 9+ years in the ones I looked at and took out my new policy with.

It seems stupid to ask on insurance quote forms to ask about NCB 10 years and over as almost every renewal I had only states 9 years or more.

How is it reasonable to claim 20 years NCD when you can only substantiate having nine? What would stop everybody doing it?

Don't think the AA have done anything wrong. He said he had 20 years when he could only prove 9.

Depends what the quotation form asked for. If it asked how many years of no claims - he's right to say 20. If it asked for how many years you can provide proof of no claims, it's 9. With the law, the devil is always in the detail.

    It asks:-
How many years no claims bonus do you have?
