I'm struggling to think of another sector in the UK where this is accepted, other than insurance? Sure, the likes of Sky will offer you discounts and then you revert to their standard tariff if you don't threaten to quit or actually leave, but that's not the same is it.

Going off the replies to this thread (in typical fashion for these forums) the OP gets a scolding rather than people agreeing that this practice should be stopped, and the money the insurers lose from not conning people out of more money could be made back by not paying out £000's for whiplish, stopping the ridiculous car hire overcharging and all the other terrible practices going on within the industry.

There's plenty of companies in all sorts of markets who offer a reduced price to tempt in new customers, which isn't available to existing ones.

Blithely accepting a renewal notice then getting irate when you discover post-renewal that you could have had it cheaper is self-defeating, isn't it?

Frankly, I'm quite happy for other people to subsidise my premiums - it's really not a lot of hassle to shop around once a year, is it?

Ah, a good ol' conspiracy theory...

Here's a clue: You think the insurers like paying out more than they have to? Either they're money-grabbing miscreants, or they're profligate wastrels. Make your mind up, because they ain't exactly mutually compatible, are they?
