Bolts for a Juliet Balcony For Building Control

The Juliet balcony 1800mm in length and off a bedroom

It should be secured by 4 bolts at each corner.

Just after advice for an example of the right bolts to secure and satisfy Building Control.

Thanks

How wide, what is it being bolted to, what is the bolt hole diameter, what has your structural engineer recommended ?

If it was being bolted to a steel structure, high tensile M16 or M20 bolts would probably suffice depending on anticipated loading.

    Thanks for the comments.

The span of the Balcony is 1900mm

The projection out is 130mm from back wall and is not designed for standing weight but as a barrier.

    Bolt hole diameter 3-4mm

It will secured through into a stud work and specifically a 7x2 timber forming the external wall of a loft extension.

The structural engineer has thrown the ball to the builder. No cals given. Called and asked yesterday but again reiterated builder on site needs to decide.

BC say bolts secured through studwork with possible test requirement.

    Builder is waiting for clarification.

At 3-4 mm hole diameter it would suggest that the manufacturer is expecting screws to be used. Have you taken advice from the manufacturer? 3" No 10s if there are 4 in each corner they aren't going to move on the impact of someone falling against it. The issue you have is if it's constantly being lent on then the screws can work loose.

Another option would be to put some threaded inserts into the timber so you can use machine screws which can be periodically tighted if required. I think you'd need to drill out the hole size to a minimum of 5-6mm for this to be effective

You absolutely sure that the holes are only 3-4mm dia ?
I would have expected something much larger.
What does the manufacturer/supplier recommend ?

Going in to timber, and acting purely as a barrier, some nice long 6mm or 8mm coach screws would probably suffice. Although, personally, I'd want to be fixing to something a bit more substantial than a scrap of timber 50mm wide.

Apologies and a correction - we have removed the screws and the holes are 11mm.

The supplier is recommending 10mm screws with a nut.

4 x M10 x200mm coach bolts with a nut should hopefully be ok without reverting to a pressure test.

Coach bolts are generally made from a low tensile, and soft steel. But an M10 coach bolt will still be plenty strong enough. Do use a steel spreader plate internally to prevent the nut/washer pulling through the wall.

I'd also use nylock nuts on the bolts
