Loss adjuster help

Hi,

After advice if possible please.

We had a flood last week in our home, which now has resulted in our insurance company private renting for a min of six months.

We have now been told that we would still need to pay gas, elec, water rates and council tax on both properties while we are out of our home. We as a family of five can't afford to pay two bills, but we have been told we have to. Even the gas and electricity are token meter in this house which again will be more expensive compared to our fixed supplier.

Anyone got advice on this please, so I cabln argue the fact we can't afford to do this.

  • Presumably the utilities are metered, and you'll surely be using less water, gas and electricity whilst not living at home? I suppose if you've got dehumidifiers running for a long time that will cost a fair bit.

Council tax is a legal obligation on both homes. Would you qualify for a 25% discount for your house with it being unoccupied?

Ultimately, you need to check your policy terms. What do they say about expenses such as these? It might be the sort of thing a decent policy offers that a basic cheap policy doesn't.

I had this query when I moved into rented accommodation whilst my house was underpinned. I just passed all bills onto the insurance company which applied to my home, and they formed part of the total claim. Actually, come to think of it, I don't remember having to pay any bills at all, so the insurance company must have picked up the tab for the rented house as well!
  • We was told that our electric and gas extra cost will be covered at our home whilst its in the process of drying out, but we still need to pay the DD. So we need to still pay our home plus the rented ones, so thats two bills. Water rates, i understand it is on a meter, but i still have to pay this in our rented accomodation as well as our home, so thats two bills. Council tax i was told as its deemed not lived in, i think we will not pay it on our home, but in the rented accomodation which is fair enough. The band is higher, but i will pass on this out our insurence company to cover the additional cost.

Unless they come back today syaing they will sort this, then i dont know what we are going to do financially.
  • All our bill are DD see, so we are going into a metered house, which i believe will work out more expensive, while still trying to cover our other home costs. We cant afford to do this.
  • So it's a cash flow issue then. Have you confirmed that the insurance company will reimburse you at the end of the claim process? If so, it looks like borrowing the money (family, friends or loan) is the solution to enable you to cover the extra costs for six months.

Speak to the utilities & council to see what they can do to help.

  • It sounds like 90% of the issues are due to not having the cash to pay now and claim back later, so ask if they’ll pay you a token amount in the meantime to tide you over.

It’s not fair that you pay neither bill while out, but also not fair that you pay both in full - you need to compromise. :)
