Amex charge card late payment

Hi All,

I’m looking for some advice. I pay my Amex charge card monthly via the app. This month when I made my payment I unfortunately didn’t realise that it had not gone through, I have no idea why it didn’t, I definitely got confirmation on the app but of course I have no proof.

When I realised, I paid the balance in full but the payment was then 19 days after due date.

I have now been charged a late payment fee and it has been reported to Experian [nightmare as I’m about to apply for a mortgage!!].

I’m not too bothered about the £12 fee but I’m more concerned with it showing on my credit report! Should they have reported this so soon? And does anyone have experience in getting something like this removed?

Thanks!

They can report it even if you're only a day late.

You can ask them if they'll overlook it on this occasion but they're under no obligation to do so.

In most cases they overlook this if its a day or so late as its 19 days you will find it very difficult because there stance will be if it didn't go through when you thought it had you would of seen the money return to you account and noticed sooner and with these things there always sceptical at best and just assume this is a story rather then the genuine mistake it is

Best thing to attempt is to make a complaint stating the app confirmed the correct payment is made and they may do something unfortunately its doubtful

If your applying for a mortgage it's best to be up front immediately about this error as this will certainly flag when they run your credit check and may cause additional issue with some lenders

In fairness Amex are a pain for this as they insist on taking direct debits about a week before the due date. I have numerous cards and the only one I don't have set up on DD is Amex for that reason.

I do have an Amex and am aware of the timing of their DD but I still pay the minimum by DD and the remainder of the balance manually nearer the due date.

That wouldn't help on a charge card, though.

Correct, the 'minimum payment' on a charge card is the full statement balance.
  • If you call Amex they'll change the date your DD is collected. On my cards there're all taken on the 5th of the month.
