Switching and your direct debit

Having a look online it seems that switching supplier is not as easy as we're told when it comes to direct debits, most of the suppliers say don't cancel your direct debit until we close your account after giving you the final bill, but if you do that they're more than likely going to take the next months direct debit, which they've just done to me, which means you're going to have to find another £100 or whatever which they'll sit on for 6 weeks or so and then refund to you, seems to me that the best way is to make sure you're in credit by a few pounds then cancel the direct debit as soon as the new supplier says the switch is completed.

Or ask your bank to reverse the debit transaction back to your account if it was taken after your contract had ended.
