I just dont believe this can be correct. I moved into a new home in Sept 19 (5 bed bungalow/20 years old/well insulated etc). It is a smart meter installed so have not required to provide readings. The reading on bills match the meters.

If as you say the meter reading on the bills match the meters then it should be easy to check the maths on the bills you have received and see if this is just that your DD was too low compared to your consumption or if there has been a mistake...

Everything else you have done or are doing is secondary to this simple bit of maths really...
  • Uk average is around £120 for gas and electric combined. So i think u do need to investigate a bit more before paying.
Is it both electric and gas that are high ?
What make are your meters ?

That may be true for your standard 3 bed house -- yvonno has a 5 bed 20 year old bungalow which is all electric. You can at least double your £120
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Agreed but over 3x national average, possible but needs investigation

My previous home was a 3/4 bed single glazed cottage that was a struggle to heat but in the year we were there it consumed 54,000kWh of gas and 3400kWh of electricity and cost £2,500. So unless you've been treating your bungalow like a sauna, the BG figures are eye-watering. However, what tariff were you on? And are they definitely billing for actual usage, or has something got garbled somewhere (like they think your smart gas meter is imperial?)?

This was my thoughts too!! My last home was 4 bed and a big old stone house with no with no insulation and wasn't as much. The good news is, that I eventually got through to BG today and was able to confirm that there was a error on the bill meaning I only;) had to pay £550 only to clear the total balance (clarified this several times lol). I explained that DD was cancelled and paid amount in full with no issues. I'm glad i did so as I'm sure they wouldn't have been rushing to refund my £400. Clearly my winter bills are still going to be quite high but I have now switched and have saved £800 a year with no exit fees if I see a better deal. Away to turn down my thermostat :rotfl::money:

Well done. I'm currently with Gulf for gas and Symbio for electricity- a combination that's hard to beat at the moment.

Glad you got it sorted. Are your smart meters switching over to the new supplier? Unless they're fairly new, they probably won't be capable of switching, so will revert to dumb meters and you'll have to submit readings yourself.
