I have 3 radiators downstairs and 4upstairs if I turn the upstairs rads off will I use less gas probably a silly question but just wondered if it would make much difference

Yes. The water arriving back at the boiler will be warmer, so it will need less gas to heat it up before the boiler thermostat kicks in.

On the basis that hot air rises unless you close the upstairs doors then the rads downstairs will have to deliver more heat. Even if you shut the doors there will still be hot air rising to the stairs and landing area unless you can shut this off. But you should still save with the upstairs doors shut. But why not take meter readings and try it for a few days with all rads on and then with upstairs off when the outside temp does not fluctuate by much from day to day.0
