Electric cars - Driveway essential?

I'm looking at a property which has a garage and separate parking which is in a communal car park, about 30m from the house. With Electric cars becoming more popular and a ban on sales in 15 years are these type of properties going to be worth al lot less? I'd hope that somehow arrangements are made for people with flats, no off road parking and driveways away from the properties.

going to be utter chaos around where I live then - mainly victorian / edwardian terraces / semis - neighbours have 4 cars and no driveway. We are unusual in being able to get our cars off the road. Doubt this has been thought through

How big is the garage? will it be feasible to use it for a car if need be?

I would expect that as electric cars get more common there will be more demand for charging points in car parks and streets but I would not be surprised if there is a lag in provision.

That said, I think properties with off-street parking already have a higher value than similar properties with the kind of arrangements you describe, so I am not sure there will be a huge change!

Maybe if you buy the property you could get ahead of the game by lobbying for charging points to be added in the car park sooner rather than later.

Bear in mind other things are being done, such as increased prevalence of chargers (solutions like chargers being built into lampposts etc being looked at), cars having better ranges so fewer "refills" needed, faster charging times, etc - I suspect plugging it in overnight at your house won't be so important.

Hard to say, there is a lot of investment currently being put into kerbside charging points, but our EV infrastructure is far from future forward so I'd always prefer to have a drive, plus fi you end up choosing Vehicle to Grid options a driveway or personal charging point is essential.

There wont be a ban on sales in 15 years.

What makes you so confident? electric cars are increasingly more popular so regardless of a ban they'll replace ICE

Electric cars make up approx. 2% of market share.

Yes they are increasingly popular, but still a fraction of the market.

As for the ban, well it's same as ID cards, announce it, do a feasibility study, get told to do one and quietly shelve it as a collosal waste of time and money :)

    • As an EV driver for more than 2 years, I'd say you cant overestimate the ease-of-use and cheapness of having your own drive or garage with power.
    • As someone who owned a home which had a separate garage as part of a block, within a small car park (also about 30metres away you dont live near Reading do you? :)) , Id say dont underestimate the sheer hassle and aggravation of inconsiderate parking and needing to get agreement from all owners of the block before you could get repairs done.
    • And yep, in a few years time houses with drives/garages that are adjacent are very likely to go up in value more than ones without. And an EV will be more inconvenient than it could be. This is an issue the government needs to tackle and hasn't even started yet but i would let that be someone else's problem.
I wouldnt buy this house though just on account of my second paragraph. Shared parking seems to bring out inconsiderate neighbours like flies to honey. Add in a shared garage block, just a nightmare.

Sales might be banned in 15 years, but buy a brand new petrol/diesel car in 14 years and you won't have to worry about it for around 30 years...
